Biden wins the 2020 presidential election!
November 9, 2020
This Saturday, the Associated Press along with other major news networks called the 2020 election, with Joe Biden as our next president and Kamala Harris as our next vice president.
The announcement came as those networks called Pennsylvania, Joe Biden’s home state. The state, along with Michigan and Wisconsin, had voted for Trump in 2016 but was crucial to Biden’s victory this year.
While some of the country has responded to the results with celebration in the streets, the work of counting ballots is not over. The Trump campaign announced it would ask for a recount of Wisconsin, where the margin of victory was just 20,000 votes, less than one percent.
“The president is well within the threshold to request a recount and we will immediately do so” said Bill Stepien, Trump’s 2020 campaign manager.
Regardless of the result, this election had record turnouts, with Trump celebrating his over 71 million votes on Twitter and Biden addressing his 75 million voters in his acceptance speech this Saturday.
“I am humbled by the trust and confidence you have placed in me,” said Biden,“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but to unify”.
Biden also addressed coronavirus pandemic during his speech, which has taken over 230,000 American lives. He explained his plans to gather scientists and experts to turn his plans into action on January 20th, when he’s sworn into office.
“I will spare no effort… or any commitment to turn around this pandemic,” said Biden
While Biden’s win is historic, Kamala Harris has also been celebrated for the precedent she’s setting. She’ll become the first woman of color to hold the office of vice president. She addressed this victory in her speech on Saturday.
“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” Harris said,“Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”
