Throughout the years, Disney has been a staple in the entertainment industry. It created childhood favorites like Cinderellla, the Little Mermaid, Tangled, and more. However, in the recent few years, it seems that Disney has lost some of its former charm as the recent movies they release underperform and often get bad ratings.
“Disney movies have lately been trying to follow trends online… I feel like they are trying to appeal to older generations and not the newer, younger ones that they ideally used to.” said Aditi Bhambhani (‘27).
Remaking Classics
Over the years, Disney has been on a journey of recreating their iconic movies, often choosing to switch to live-action instead of the traditional animated style of the originals. This gave audiences many great movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Aladdin. However, recently, remakes such as The Little Mermaid have been struggling to do well, receiving a bad reputation in the public eye.
“For the animated version, I think Ursula was a lot better. I think it’s easier to portray her in animated form, and, in certain ways, I felt it was more magical in the animated version,” said Savannah Stoer (‘27).
Divided Opinions
Recently, the topic of the new Snow White has been in the news. Both sides have risen, some supporting Disney, while others criticize the creative decisions and choices made in the production. The remake was released on March 21st but has been making waves for a while from the trailer and interviews turning viewers away.
“I feel like it retold the [original story of Snow White] pretty accurately. I really liked the way they portrayed the animals, and I think [Rachel Zegler] is a very talented actor. The PR was pretty bad. I think that’s why it failed.” said Olivia Choi (‘27).
As Disney continues on its new journey, it’’ll always have people on both sides of the matter. But this hasn’t stopped it. Even now, plans are in the making for live action Moana, Lilo and Stitch and possibly Tangled. While some of them have faced harsh criticism online, it seems that many viewers still continue to watch and enjoy the movies, most of them calling it an enjoyable experience at the end.
