On April 17th, Amador Valley hosted the annual Spring Fling track meet, a spirited event themed around dance. The meet proved to be a major success for many AV athletes, with several personal records (PRs) being shattered throughout the day.
“I did really well in the 1600, which is a mile, and the 800. “I PR’d in both—with an 11-second PR in the mile and a five-second PR in the 800,” said Gavin Shimojima (’27).
For many student-athletes, track isn’t their main sport. Instead, they use it as cross-training to improve their performance in other athletic pursuits. Others find that their primary sport benefits their track events.
“It can definitely help you because you have a basis for a lot of things—you have the athleticism and the flexibility. But it can also definitely take a toll on you if you don’t know how to manage your time and your activity,” said Sophie Lashkarian (’28).
One thing that made this meet stand out was the atmosphere. Competing on their home turf gave AV students a sense of comfort and confidence.
“This meet has really nice weather. It’s sunny but cool, and it’s much nicer being where we always practice. We know what we’re doing and where we’re going,” said Amit Ben Yehezhel (’28).
For returning athletes, the growth from last season to now has been clear. Several runners have moved up in rankings, solidifying their place among the top competitors.
“Compared to last year, it’s a huge improvement. Last year, I was in one of the last seeds for varsity. This year, I’m usually the first seed. I used to be in the slower heats, and now I’m in the fastest heat every time,” said Dhruv Ranjit (’27).
As the season continues, Amador athletes remain focused on progress—one race, one PR at a time.
