The Montoya sisters are a powerful duo both on and off the soccer field. Although they only have one year together in high school, they finally have the chance to play on the same team. Due to their age difference, Addison and Maylen Montoya never had this opportunity—until now. This season, Addison made the varsity team, allowing them to share the field for the first time.
At the Same Time
“It’s just so special to have one year where they get to play together. They both play competitive soccer, and, obviously, their years apart, they don’t get that time together. So having them be teammates and sisters and just seeing everything happen on the field with them together has been really cool,” said mother of the sisters Sussie Montoya.
For the past four years, Maylen Montoya has played varsity soccer for Amador Valley. Now, as Addison joins the team, she gets to pass on that experience to her younger sister.
“It’s cool watching her play in this environment because I’ve been able to do it. And then watching her do it, it’s really cool,” said Maylen Montoya (‘25).
Playing alongside a sibling brings a unique level of competition, pushing each player to improve both on and off the field.
“She’s a great person. I love that too, and she pushes me every bit to be a better person and a better player,” said Addison Montoya (‘28).
The sisters share an understanding that extends beyond their bond—they also anticipate each other’s movements on the field, creating a strong connection in their gameplay.
“It’s not really any different off the field, but on the field, especially when we play on the same side, I know her movements, and she knows mine. So it’s like we’re able to connect better than anyone else,” said Maylen Montoya.
Their connection as sisters has always been strong, but this season together has made it even tighter.
“I say we’re each other’s best friends. We’re really close, and we connect well both on and off the field,” said Addison Montoya.
