Searching for Hope: Los Angeles Families Look to Rebuild After Devastating Fires

The city of Los Angeles has endured some of the worst natural disasters in recent California history. The Palisades and Eaton fires have raged through, destroying buildings, homes, and devastating families.

I live fairly close to the Eaton Fire that burned down a large portion of Altadena, CA. Although my home was not directly impacted by the fire, it has affected me in several ways. In the first few days after the fire started, the air was filled with ash and smoke. I thought it might be better at the office but when I went to work, the air quality was also very bad,” said Simon Kuo, a resident in LA.

Rebuilding

Because of the fires, many families have been displaced. At one point, over 200,000 were put under evacuation order. Additionally, families will not have to put more money into rebuilding what’s left of their homes.

“My family plans on rebuilding our house; we are currently looking for architects for the job as architectural companies will most likely be very busy in the coming months. However, I know some of my neighbors are planning to just sell their land and move elsewhere,” said Lily Bingham, resident of LA.

According to BBC news, the Palisades fire had swept down the hills and along the coast. In turn it destroyed beach front homes and burned the houses of some celebrities.

“I am mindful and acknowledge my feelings of sadness that we just experienced this level of destruction in the community from the wildfires. There are no guarantees that the communities affected will not be permanently changed,” said Yvone Kuo, a resident of LA.

From CBS, some residents there have spotted that they happened to see a fire break out the morning of Jan 7 close to Skull Rock Trailhead. But the investigators are still curious on how it started.

“Some of my coworkers have had to deal with clients who lost their homes and are displaced.  We continually learn about new resources and avenues to hopefully provide support for their current needs,” said Kuo.
