A Gathering for Bird Lovers
The Alameda County Fairgrounds hosts its exotic bird market three to four times a year, drawing bird lovers and visitors alike. The event showcases a variety of birds, from small and delicate to colorful and majestic.
“ We have a wide range of birds, anywhere from as small as finches to as large as macaws. There’s different types of exotic birds, the larger birds are gonna be mostly parrots. We hand raise these so that they’re friendly and they make ideal pets,” explains Jocelyn, a vendor at the bird market.
Handcrafted Supplies for Bird Owners
Birds aren’t the only highlight of the market. Vendors also offer handcrafted accessories and supplies to support bird owners.
“ We sell, manzanita perches, playstands, we hand make all the toys … we hand make everything, so it takes a lot of time,” said handcraft vendor Ashley.
A Passion That Lasts a Lifetime
For many, the bird market represents more than just a place to shop. It reflects a lifelong love for birds.
“ I love birds. I love animals in general, but birds are my go-to. It’s a hobby. I started when I was little and then I keep doing it and I probably will do it till the day I die,” said Jose, a long-time bird enthusiast.
The Challenges of Caring for Birds
Owning a bird comes with challenges, from providing proper care to meeting their daily needs.
“ If someone wants to get a bird, they’re a ton of work. They’re awesome, but they do take up a lot of time. They’re noisy, they chew, but they’re great companions for sure,” said Ashley.
Caring for a bird requires more than just time and patience. It also involves maintaining hygiene and offering a balanced diet.
“ Hygiene is a big part of taking care of a pet bird and a well-rounded diet,” said Jocelyn.
