Christmas is in full swing, complete with mugs full of sweet hot chocolate and Christmas movie marathons for days. Some of the most popularly watched movies this festive time are Elf, Home Alone, and A Christmas Story. However, as movie watchers replay movies like these, they overlook the countless other movies.
The Christmas Chronicles
The first Christmas Chronicles movie came out in 2018 with the second following not long after in 2020. The first movie follows a brother and sister navigating the challenges of growing older, juggling complicated relationships, and believing the unimaginable.
The older brother starts losing his Christmas spirit, but the girl strongly believes in Santa and always sends him letters. Shortly after, they meet Santa Claus and they go on an adventure with him, delivering presents and trying to keep up the Christmas cheer.
“It’s relatable because oftentimes once everyone gets older, they lose their Christmas spirit. It’s also a different plot compared to other movies, so I like that,” said Allen Chen (‘27).
Christmas with the Kranks
Transitioning to a light-hearted movie that will make your stomach hurt from laughing, Christmas with the Kranks (2004) stars Tim Allen as Luther Krank. Krank and his wife, Nora, get ready to settle in for a comfortable Christmas but decide to skip it. However, their plan gets spoiled as their daughter decides to come home with her fiance.
“It’s a little weirder than most, so if you don’t like weird movies, you won’t like this one. My favorite part would probably be when he gets Botox and as a result, his face freezes up for the rest of the day,” said Sophie Bhatia (‘28).
Noelle
Lastly, Noelle (2019) starring the famous Anna Kendrick as Noelle Kringle. This movie follows Noelle as she tries to find herself and own importance. Her brother is next in line to be Santa Claus causing Noelle to feel insignificant in the eyes of their father. Things start to take a turn as her brother goes missing and it’s up to her to save Christmas.
“I really like the female take on the movie. Most Christmas movies are just about Santa and this one was really modern, which I thought was cool. It’s pretty recent and I liked how it wasn’t just about Christmas. It kind of focused more on Noelle’s perspective and Santa Claus’ children instead of just Santa,” said Devna Bhandula (‘27).
