As the birthplace of the United States and home to 1.5 million, Philadelphia is a city of great importance. However, beyond the postcards and historical landmarks is a city within a city: the Reading Terminal Market.
“The diversity [of the market] strengthens the community. That diversity is what allows individuals to expand beyond themselves. If you only do what you know, you’ll never become more than what you are,” said Philadelphia tourist Eric Gutmann.
People from all corners of the world come to this bustling metropolis for fresh food, unique goods, and diverse souvenirs. The market is home to over seventy-five stalls, most of which are family owned and generations old.
“My dad started [this business] thirty years ago… over half my life I’ve been working here. Our family [also] owns Bassetts Ice Cream too so that has been here since day one of this place, 130 years ago, ” said Eric Bassett, owner of The Original Turkey.
Today, the Terminal has truly grown beyond its humble beginnings. Just as Philadelphia symbolizes the dawn of America, the market is a land of opportunity for success and fresh starts.
“Our restaurant was founded in 1981. My parents came here from overseas. They worked very hard and acquired this place and we basically grew up in this market behind this counter, and we’ve been here for about 43 years,” said Kamal’s Middle-Eastern Specialties co-owner Adham Albarouki.
People from all walks of life pay homage to their heritage through the variety of foods and items. More than just a market, the Reading Terminal provides a community where every person could find a place.
While vendors grapple for the same client base, the ever-present sense of solidarity never wanes. Instead of competition, camaraderie reigns.
“A lot of the shop owners and workers all love each other and support each other and that’s across all kinds of cultural things. Maybe in other places in the world, this would keep us apart,” said Akosua Nyo, Amazulu sales associate.
Founded in 1893, the Reading Terminal Market’s tumultuous history ultimately allowed it to become the cultural melting pot it is today. Persevering through economic depression, war, and closure, the market remains a steadfast beacon of strength.
For many, the market reflects personal histories, making it representative of Philadelphia’s core. The Reading Terminal Market is a symbol of hope, a symbol of struggle, but ultimately a symbol of perseverance and the American Dream.
