On November 5, as the real election unfolded, students at Amador Valley High School participated in the California Student Mock Election. For many, this was their first opportunity to engage with the electoral process.
Inspiring Civic Involvement Among Young Voters
The mock election aims to encourage young voters to become more involved in their communities. After learning about each candidate and their platforms, high school and middle school students cast ballots through online registration. The Mock Election Coordinator reports the final schoolwide results after students submit their votes.
“The act of voting helps get people accustomed to participation. Once they reach voting age, the process will feel less intimidating and more normalized. This encourages students to have real-world engagements,” said AV Comp Civics teacher Stacey Sklar.
Voicing Change for the Future
For some students, the mock election allowed them to express the changes they hope to see in their communities and the wider political landscape.
“The mock elections show what youth and Amador students want, which might represent future demographics and priorities in ten to twenty years,” said Rishabh Dave (’26).
Understanding Diverse Perspectives on Campus
Others found the election an opportunity to understand the varied views of their peers.
“I think it’s a good way for students to voice their opinions and learn how to share perspectives on our diverse campus,” said Samir Sharma (’25).
Regardless of their opinions, students recognized the importance of participating in elections and expressing their views.
“It’s essential to know students’ opinions because we’re the future lawmakers and congressmen of the United States. The election reflects what the youth want,” said Dave.
