After a strong season, Amador’s flag football team gears up for their 2024 season. Coming off of their first year, the team hopes to start the season strong. However, their sport is slightly different than its counterpart.
We play 7 on 7 and everybody in our game is eligible. Anybody can go out for a pass and catch the ball and score touchdowns, which is fun. Our game is supposed to be no-contact, so there is no tackling, pushing, or bumping into.” AVHS Flag Football Coach Phil Peacock.
The team has already gotten off to a better start this year, but with the creation of a new team, new challenges are always coming up.
“This is a new sport for almost everyone and since I have more experience and have been playing for almost 5 years, as the team captain and leader, it’s my job to know that they look up to me and help coach them so we become better as one,” said Riley Harrington (‘27).
Adapting Coaching Styles
In addition to the players, the coaching staff also has to make some changes in terms of their coaching style and practicing methods.
“The biggest challenge was that I was coming from the boys’ football game, where I’ve coached for 25 plus years and the girl’s game is very different, so we learned a lot of lessons that we do things much, much differently this year,” said Peacock.
A big part of creating a new team is making sure team chemistry is always high, whether that’s on the field or off, which can mean creating meaningful bonds within the team.
“Team bonding is very important to get everybody on the same page and to get to know each other. The girls have done a great job at creating a special bond in the sisterhood within the flag football team,” said Peacock.
Overall, the team looks to gain more recognition this season and foster a team community where commitment and excellence are the standards.“Having a good bond with your teammates is very important. It helps with team chemistry and being comfortable with one another. We all play better when we are on the same page,” says Georgia Brown (‘26).
