With homecoming just around the corner, Amador Valley teachers and students reflect on how the homecoming traditions have changed over the years.
In the past, the social norm was a date-only event, “I had a date that I wasn’t really dating but she was a fun friend and I was nominated for homecoming prince with two of my buddies,” said Flag Football and Wrestling Coach Travis Chubb.
In contrast, many students today attend the dance in large groups, regardless if they have a date or not. The dance is now a big social event where students can meet new people.
“I feel like I made a lot of friends there and I feel like you really get to meet all the grade levels together,” said Caydence Likeness (‘25).
From the Past
In past decades, professional photographers used to take pictures of students while at the dance.
“We used to do pictures. They would have professional photographers and you would go and take pictures at the school” said Chubb.
Now, the trend has changed. Students typically gather at a friend’s house to get ready and take pictures before heading to the dance.
“It was very fun. I took pictures at one of my guy friend’s house and then our moms drove us off to homecoming” said Ashley Mantha (‘25).
T0 the Future
People can have many different experiences at homecoming. For one Amador student, homecoming is a memorable moment in their high school journey.
“I hadn’t really attended homecoming [freshman and sophomore year] but for homecoming, junior year was one of the special moments in my life I had never really been a part of a big group of friends till junior year and to be there dancing with all of my friends and having a good time it just was really something,” said Christopher Asuncion (‘25).
For most Amador students, one thing is clear; there is anticipation for this year’s event.
“I’m excited for this homecoming since I feel like there’s going to be a lot of turnout because the ticket sale line has been very long so I’m excited to see all the classes come together and unite for the first time,” said Likeness.
