This past month, our Amador Valley Winter Guard Varsity team competed in the WGI championship and got fourth place in the Scholastic A division scoring 95.290 points with their show Remember Me.
This is the first time since 2016 that our Varsity Winter Guard team has made it to the WGI championships. Coming back from many tough obstacles after COVID, the team looks to surpass their prior achievements.
“[Our trip to Dayton] was full of excitement for both the team and the adults that accompanied us on this trip. We’d been looking forward to this for longer than the duration of the winter season, so to finally be there was both thrilling and bittersweet, as we knew that we would miss the moments we were living in,” said Varisty Winter Guard Captain Maria Clara Sapriza (‘24).
Many things led to the team’s success, from excellent cooperation to having some amazing coaches. All these things led to the team’s incredible success as fourth place finalists.
“The key contributor was the connection between everyone in the team,” said Varsity Winter Guard Member Kiki Yasui (‘26).
Many more surprises will come next season, as the guard tries their best to beat their record and make it to the finals once again, only this time in a whole new category.
“In Winter of 2025, the Varsity Winter Guard will be moving up a competitive category, from Scholastic A to Scholastic Open,” said Sapriza.
This means that the winter guard next year will be plunged into new territory for the first time in years, and will have to compete with new various schools.
