Since the beginning of November, the Amador Valley girls softball team has been practicing multiple times a week for their upcoming spring season. The preparation involves a mix of physical conditioning, fundamental drills, and even some quirky traditions.
“Softball is an extremely superstitious sport. I always listen to the same four songs before every single game and wear my hair in the same style,” said Caydence Likeness (‘25)
Pre-season, led by the upperclassmen, emphasizes cardio, strength training, and softball-specific drills. Glove work, footwork, and consistency with both offensive and defensive drills have become the building blocks for a successful season.
“The best thing for softball is just staying consistent with your practice. The more you put work into it, the better you’ll get out of it,” said Taylor Oxe (‘24).
Additionally, the team engages in pre-game rituals like forming a circle and having a pep talk to mentally prepare for the challenges ahead. These traditions highlight the importance of unity and support within the team, creating a bond that goes beyond the confines of the softball field.
“We hang out a little stuffed animal that we hang on our dugout. He is like a little monkey and is our little spirit animal,”said Oxe (’24).
Amador Valley High School girls’ softball team showcases not only their dedication to physical conditioning and fundamental skills but also their belief in the power of consistency and superstitions to pave the way for success. Due to their success last year, they continue to focus on growth this season.
