Amador and Foothill boys lacrosse battle for Mike Lambrecht Helmet Trophy
Foothill High School won the varsity boy’s lacrosse game against Amador Valley, regaining possession of the Mike Lambrecht Helmet Trophy. This helmet is given to the winner of the rivalry game that takes place every year between the two schools. On April 28, this game took place at Foothill, with the Falcons winning by a score of 11-4.
The Pleasanton rivalry game between the two schools is a very spirited event filled with traditions. Stands were filled with Amador parents wearing their boys’ home jerseys to the game, accessorizing with purple and gold. The most important tradition is the exchange of the Mike Lambrecht Helmet.
“The helmet tradition started way back around the 2000s, at the peak of rivalry lacrosse. My coach [Mike Lambrecht] decided to paint his old college helmet and use it as a trophy. This coach then retired, but we hired him again about four years ago, so it has gone full circle,” said Foothill lacrosse player Graham Zander (‘24).
This was one of the most important games of the season because Amador would have gone on to play in the NCS (North Coast Section) playoffs if victorious. Friday’s loss broke the Dons’ nine-year winning streak of owning the helmet as they played their final game of the season.
“I felt pretty bad when we lost the helmet to Foothill. It was sad because we have had it for a long time, and this was the first time I have lost to Foothill,” said Amador lacrosse player Braden O’Donnell (‘24).
This game was very special to Foothill players because it was the first time any of them have won against Amador. This is an intense game, and the legendary helmet trophy adds excitement to the matchups. It has been a tradition that has gone on for many years, honoring the rivalry between Foothill and Amador.
“When Foothill won the helmet, it was pure excitement and joy. It was very exciting that after nine years, we got my coach’s helmet back,” said Zande
