NBA Playoffs’ regular season is finally over; one big question remains: who will become the 2022-2023 MVP? This has been one of the most heated MVP races in recent memory. Normally there is one stellar player who rises above the rest, but this year there are three players in contention for the coveted award.

“I’m loving this MVP Race this year. It’s so toxic because all of them are so good but only one of them can win, so all the fanbases are arguing, ” said Pranav Abhinand Iyer (‘24).

The three players in question are Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic. They each are having incredible years statistically, putting up numbers that haven’t been seen in a long time.

“Each is having statistically incredible years. Personally, I want Giannis to win because I’m a huge fan, but I am fine with any of them winning,” said Iyer.

Joel Embiid, one of the candidates, averaging 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists, is marking one of the greatest seasons for a center since Shaquille O’Neal. This also means that he will once again win the scoring title.

“I want Embiid to win because he is the most dominant big man in the league by far. Literally, no one can stop him from scoring, and his huge impact on defense makes him way better than the other candidates,” said Alekh Shah (‘24).

Giannis Antetokounmpo is having a year averaging 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists. This is the main reason the Milwaukee Bucks are 1st seed in the East. His offensive pressure of driving to the rim, as well as his ability to outmuscle his opponents, are big reasons for his MVP campaign.

“Giannis is so good this season. Every time I watch him, he seems unstoppable. He also is an amazing team leader,” said Iyer.

Nikola Jokic is also having yet again another phenomenal season, averaging a triple-double, with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. This paired with his playmaking ability and high basketball IQ could give him his third consecutive MVP.

“Jokic is having a great season. He is a statistical anomaly, I think averaging a triple-double yet again. That’s unheard of for a center, and his team is first in the conference. I don’t think they will make it that far into the playoffs due to team depth issues, but overall as a player Jokic is phenomenal,” said Aarav Kakad (‘24).
