Amirtha Srinivasan (’24) – 1st Place in Job Seeking Skills and Emotional Well-Being
What event did you compete in?
I did two events. I did job seeking skills and emotional well-being. Job seeking skills consisted of preparing an interview and also preparing a resume and portfolio and then presenting that in front of the judges and participating in a interview with the judges, similar to that in interview for a job. The emotional well-being challenge was kind of a long term project. It was a group based project we did and it consisted of presentations in front of different groups of people, collecting data and analyzing them, and presenting that in front of the judges. Our topic was body positivity, so we decided to advocate for that in front of middle school students.
Did you expect to win?
No, I was not expecting the win because there were alot of people there so it was a very competitive environment. In that moment, it was kind of surreal.
How did you prepare for the competition? Any challenges?
Preparation for it was mainly practicing what we would say during the interview. During the presentation, since both of my events consisted of talking in front of the judges, I just prepared by practicing at home in front of my parents and other people I knew. In terms of challenges, I think the biggest challenge was the mental block of going into a room in front of people I don’t know and speaking in front of them. In order to prepare for that, I tried to present in front of as many people as I knew.
What are your future goals?
I hope we place at the International Leadership Conference (ILC), and I hope we also place well next year at SLC and ILC. I hope to grow the team as well.
