Love, dance, and soul: The Romantics pays homage to Yash Chopra’s Bollywood
On February 14, Netflix released The Romantics, a four-part documentary series that pays homage to the fifty year legacy of Yash Chopra, Yash Raj Films, and Indian cinema.
With behind-the-scenes insights from 35 prominent voices in the Hindi film industry, the series immerses viewers in a nostalgic journey that tells the story of a man, a camera, and a vision to redefine love.
“Having watched all of the episodes, the series beautifully captured the essence of Yash Raj Films and their impact on Bollywood. It was a nostalgic journey that reminded me why I fell in love with Hindi cinema in the first place,” said Indian Culture Club member Ativ Asarawala (‘24).
Directed by the well-known Smriti Mundhra, the documentary series boasts a star-studded lineup of actors from three generations, all of whom widely attribute their success to Chopra. Featuring the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Rani Mukerji, Hrithik Roshan, and Ranveer Singh, the series showcases a diverse range of perspectives from some of Bollywood’s biggest names.
“I was struck by the sheer number of voices that came together to pay tribute to Yash Chopra and his legacy. It was truly inspiring to see so many Bollywood stars come together to share their unique perspectives and experiences of working with him,” said Asarawala.
In addition to the perspectives of many Bollywood stars, Mundhra scored a sit-down with the famously reclusive Aditya Chopra, son of Chopra and director of the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, in the second hour of the documentary. This often unheard perspective has prompted many to watch the show, garnering millions of views worldwide.
“I have never heard Aditya Chopra speak before. He is such a powerful and influential person in Bollywood, and many people do not even know who he is,” said Kirtida Nannoo.
The documentary series highlighted Chopra’s contribution to Indian cinema, which has earned him respect and recognition. Many have praised the show’s beautiful portrayal of the evolution of Bollywood and what sets it apart from other film industries around the globe.
“It changed my perception of Bollywood as a whole. May his legacy live on,” said Nannoo.
Ultimately, The Romantics serves as a mesmerizing homage to what some call a master storyteller, whose cinematic marvels have imprinted themselves on Indian cinema and whose influence has touched the hearts of millions worldwide.
