Spring sports overview: tryouts, games and more
January 26, 2023
With spring tryouts around the corner for multiple sports, there are multiple key things to take note of during the application and actual tryout process. Each sport has a different requirement but all teams require a physical form as well as registration through HomeCampus.com
To avoid conflict, each sport has a different deadline for registration which can be found on the Amador Athletics page along with other important information. There will also be a makeup period for forms from February first through the third in which any late forms across all sports can be submitted.
Athletic director Alphonso Powell said that there may be confusion during the application process and anyone with any questions should reach out to him via email or text. However, for those seeking immediate assistance, he says to “contact [him] via text instead of email because [he] will likely respond faster.”
Students seeking to participate in a sport must also uphold their academic performance in order to register. “In order to sign up for a sport, all of your grades must be a C or higher. No Fs will be accepted, even if your five other classes are fine. You could have five As and one F and it doesn’t make a difference”, said Powell. However, depending on the situation, exceptions can be made for academic performance.
All participants must also be exempt from any debt owed. Most commonly, students forget to return a book or textbook to the library and have accumulated debt due to unreturned materials. “Make sure you or your child checks in with the library to make sure all your debts are cleared,” said Powell during the tryout information session, “a lot of the times students submit their forms and forget about this part. Be sure to double-check and confirm.”
Tryout and deadline dates vary across sports so it is essential to make contact with the coach or manager of your desired sport. They will have more specific information pertaining to you outside of the general application process.
“Most coaches are here tonight but if you want their contact information text or email me and I can give it to you. For freshmen and new players I recommend talking to upperclassmen or older members of your sport so you can get a better understanding of tryouts and how the program rolls,” said Powell.
Another key piece of information is students cannot participate in more than one sport per season. “A student cannot participate in both tennis and track; they have to choose one,” said Powell, “However, if you are cut from a sport and miss the deadline to sign up for another, talk to me and we can work something out for you.”
Once seasons start, games and competitions will be posted on the Amador Events calendar with dates and times. Certain sports will require a fee of entry while others are free of charge.
