The Story

Death to 2020 is a comedy documentary, with some serious bits, about the events that occurred in the year of 2020. It goes into a lot of detail into a variety of different topics like politics, COVID, the economy etc. It is created by Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones. 

What is there to like? 

One of the strongest and funniest points of the film are the cast. They portray fictional characters that are interviewed for their view on the events that took place. Most of the characters represent stereotypes of many different types of people. For example, the film features a soccer mom who is undeniably racist, but ignores all allegations of it, a scientist whose explanations are often overshadowed by the obscure footage, a political representative who constantly goes behind her back, the british queen, and many more.

It’s not all comedy though. There are some informational and serious bits here and there. One of such moments was the BLM protests. It is portrayed with the seriousness it deserves. It also portrays the events of the election with much accuracy. 

The production and direction of the movie is also very top notch. The totally unrelated events of 2020 somehow fluidly flow very well throughout the duration of the movie. 

Some dislikes

To start, one dislike is the switching of the point of view from American and British from time to time. 

 Also, one  of the weak points is some of the comedy that is integrated into the film. The mix of complex irony and simple puns might keep you on guard on what you should pay attention to and what not to. More than that, the jokes feel recycled and overused. The whole documentary feels like a twitter feed in media form. 

Verdict

Overall the movie is fun to watch, but don’t expect the best of the best comedy. It will give you something to watch and laugh about during the quarantine, but probably won’t be an unforgettable experience for most.
