TV Show Review: ‘WandaVision’
January 23, 2021
Marvel fan or not, WandaVision might be just what you need to start off 2021. Taking place after Avengers: Endgame (2019), superheroes and newlywed couple Wanda and Vision settle into a comfy, typical suburban life, while simultaneously attempting to hide their powers from everyone.
To give a little more context, Wanda is a psychic that engages in telepathy and telekinesis, while Vision is an android created by an Infinity Stone, two geniuses, and an evil robot. In a situation yet to be explained, Vision, who died in the previous Marvel film, now lives happily with Wanda as an almost-normal couple, as all fans had hoped.
First off, I feel like it’s important to note that this show’s genre is more of a 50’s sitcom than anything else. Filmed in black and white with the classic laugh track and soundtrack, the last thing this show is is a typical Marvel film with loads of adventure and action.
It’s really nothing we’ve seen before in the Marvel world. It opens up a new genre to fans, using elements from Marvel’s original comics and incorporating easter eggs from the MCU. Truthfully, if you’re a big fan of Marvel, I’ll bet you’ll enjoy this more than you think.
Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, the same actors that played Wanda and Vision in the MCU, continue to star in this miniseries. Like always, they worked as a perfect dynamic with lots of connection and although they had to play their superhero roles in a different way for this series, they perfected it the best way they could.
Unfortunately, I have to admit, it’s a little bit of a boring plot in my opinion. Sure, I’ve only been able to watch the first two episodes because they are the only ones currently available, but it hasn’t really grabbed my attention so far. Especially for being a sitcom, it could at least be a bit funnier. I can say that the second episode is much more interesting than the first, so there’s definitely hope.
It’s important to note that the episodes are relatively short, ranging from around 29-36 minutes. This definitely made the show easier to watch because although the plot isn’t fantastic, it was relatively well-paced.
Really, I’m excited to see where the show will lead to. They left a door open with many different possibilities and everything is so fresh considering it’s only the beginning, so I’d recommend watching it to see where it takes us.
WandaVision, available on Disney+, will premiere its 4th episode on January 29th and will continue to run for nine episodes up until March 5th.
